Sorry!

Yikes, I really dropped off the face of the earth there for a while. I've just had a really hard time bringing myself to blog for a while, for a variety of reasons: the stress of living in Northern Virginia (yeah, I know, cry me a river). I've changed jobs twice--once I switched jobs for more money/more responsibility. Then I switched again because I was laid off (and I'm very happy with my job now, thank goodness, and hopefully they are also happy with me!). We had a dreadful, snowy winter this past year and I had the most severe seasonal depression of my life. I've also been pondering how to write because my husband's idea of internet privacy and mine are a bit different. I've been trying to figure out how to approach the blog with that in mind, because I want to be respectful of his privacy while still being able to express myself. And we've been busy for the last month and a half because my MIL arrived in mid-September.

She'll be staying until February this time, and we're also starting her green card application this month (before USCIS raises the fees). I have to say, having a house with more space has been really nice for all of us. She's got a nice bedroom and her own private bathroom downstairs, so we don't disturb each other (she wakes up later than I do in the mornings, and we tend to stay up later than she does). Mummy spends her days learning to type and use the internet, studying English, taking walks, going and chatting with the owner of the Indian grocery store around the corner from our house, etc. And of course she's teaching me some new recipes, such as sooji ki idlis, etc. We've had some "girls' days out" to DC for sightseeing together, shopping, etc. and so far it's been just a lovely visit. I've been taking pictures and I'll post them in the next couple days. I promise! Pukka!

I have the same privacy issues you know. You could consider blogging anonymously, and letting only those people who you would like to read your blog your blog web address.

Er... Include me and Nickelo too pls!

Congratulations on your new job!

My SO shares your DH's sentiments regarding privacy. I would love to start a blog (anonymously) about my desi relationship, but I don't for the issue of privacy more for my SO than for myself.

That's so neat that your MIL is studying English. I'm looking forward to teaching my future MIL some English if she's interested which hopefully she will be. If you don't mind me asking, how did that come about? Was it your MIL's idea for her to learn English? or did you and/or your DH suggest it? We usually hear about the non desi learning our partner's language. It's very interesting to hear about your MIL! I hope you'll share more.

Yes, I could do it more anonymously, but the fact would still remain that I'd be publishing things my husband would rather keep private. So I will just be careful here.

My MIL learned some English when she was in school, but didn't have much use for it. After I married V, he suggested that she start taking coaching classes in India, so she did. Then, on her last visit here and for this visit, she has gone to take ESL classes. She puts me to shame, really...I don't have time for studying Hindi so her English is much better now than my Hindi is.

Hey, I think living in NoVa is stressful! The weather is horrible about 9 months of the year, and the traffic is just crazy. We realized how crazy it was when we moved to the crowded Bay Area... and suddenly, we weren't constantly in stop & go traffic. Anyways, I'm glad things are sorting out for you, and hopefully you aren't dreading this snow season too much! (I will try not to smirk too loudly from CA ;-) )

Anyways, keep up the posting and don't drop off the face of the earth again! (Hypocritical in the extreme, I know!)

We can't wait to leave suburbia, its traffic, and its bad attitude behind. We're just itching to head out, but it will take money and miracles.

Mr. 4B and I have different ideas of online privacy as well. For me, a lot of social media is just about venting and looking for people who will understand what I'm going through. Sometime, Mr. 4B will get mad at me just for posting something on facebook that has to do with him. I try to keep things anonymous, but he still gets irked when I write about his relatives behaving badly (that's what they do--they're relatives!).
He's gone so far as to call me an a sort of on-line exhibitionist.

It *is* stressful here! I thought it would be no big deal because my mom's whole side of the family is all here...but I just wasn't prepared at all. I'm such a small-town girl at heart. And I miss the mountains so much.

4B, my husband is the same way, even on Facebook. Even if I post stuff that I think is pretty harmless, he says he just doesn't want anyone else knowing our business. Weird. Plus, there's the whole "evil eye" thing of not saying too much good or bragging stuff too, heh.

Glad to see you back!
You have the right to complain(not that you did) about NoVa! Especially if you are working... which means you are driving more in that horrible traffic, ugh. Have you been to Ravi Kabob?

(Don't go to Ravi Kabob - Kabob Palace in Crystal City is so much better!)
